“The intimacy involved with creating art is wonderful as I feel like I am creating a personal connection with my pieces and those who will own them.”

Surf City Pier

The Artist

Hi, Im Joy! :)

I’m from the small town of York, SC. Right now I live right behind Surf City, NC. I love living by the coast as there is so much to be inspired by here.

I graduated from Limestone University in 2021 with a BA in Studio Art and Graphic Design. There, I did an independent study in ceramics. My first pottery class was honestly rough and it took years of practice to even get a grasp on the concept. Now, I am so proud of myself and I’m so glad I stuck with it because I love pottery (obviously) and want to do it for the rest of my life!

I also love teaching! In college, I worked as an after-school art teacher. It was so much fun seeing kids create their own art that they imagined. After graduation, I worked as an Art Instructor at a paint and sip company as well as a TA for a kindergarten class until I moved to the coast. All though I was working two jobs that were from early morning to late at night, I enjoyed it and had so much fun.

Now I have my own pottery business where I sell online, sell at markets, and teach pottery/painting classes! All my pottery is made in my garage at the moment but I hope to be able to build up my funds from selling my pottery to slowly make those steps to my dream studio!

Pottery is really intimate to me personally. I get to create pieces that will be a part of different homes, with different people, in all different places. I make a lot of dinnerware dishes as I believe having a meal on a handmade plate or bowl makes the meal experience just so much more enjoyable. Drinking coffee, tea, or whatever the drink of choice is out of a handmade mug or tumbler makes it taste so much better. Most can agree that once you make that step to using handmade pieces, you will never go back.

There is just so much to love about pottery- the process, the failures, the successes, the connections….. it’s just magical.
